Practise me, c’est le roc

Danced again. I did a lot of spins tonight and I was feeling dizzy all night. I even step on my partners’ shoes. Lucky that they all didn’t mind.

Although I am new to ceroc, I can tell it is very different from belly dance, which I have been practising for 2 years. I took the first step in belly dance because I can always practice it at home (and I can do it when kiwi ‘s taking his nap). Another reason is that I don’t need a partner, so that I don’t have the embarrassment when the clumsy me keeps stepping on somebody else’s bare feet (certainly we do bellydance with bare feet but ceroc with shoes). In doing belly dance, I decide all on my own on whichever moves I should take, just mind that they all fit the beats; by contrast, ceroc, of course, requires a partner but the most significant difference is that my partner makes all decisions.

The basic ceroc is:
He leads his lady, dominantly.
He initiates every move along with the melody.
He spins his lady. He turns his lady. He locks his lady.
Well, limbs tangled, breath inches away. He holds his lady.
Tonight, we did some more spinning. So he keeps me spinning, spinning, spinning…
Until I finally fell into his arms and did nothing else and couldn’t stop laughing.

So you see, I barely do anything but to feel how he pushes me. Don’t think that it’s easy. Recognizing the subtle moves by merely touching his hands is very difficult. Maybe it’s because I have danced solo too much.

Apart from the partner thing, the movements are hardly the same. Belly dance mainly focuses on the pelvis moves, and there is a great emphasis that the spine should be kept straight when dancing. Oh, one more, keep smiling and look at your audience (or your imaginary audience). Ceroc, on the other hand, doesn’t care much about the spine. As I see, every piece of bones seems to dance to the music. Plus, not all guys smile and look at me when they dance (or maybe I am too short to reach their eye level?)

I don’t dance well but surely I know practise makes perfect. So I will keep myself rocked every Tuesday.
