Breakin' (1984)

If you think the dancing in Step Up All In is the best, you'll know you're wrong after watching this.
The Dances
This is a DANCING movie. Unlike most movies I have blogged about, Breakin' had 90% of the time having the fantastic three dancing. And the dancing was really good, even it's 30 years ago, we can now still feel inspired. From the first when Kelly was purely jazz, she was nice demonstrating the excellent skills, then on the beach we could see the improvisation, and the night beat in club gave us an exciting battle. Then, as the simple story goes so straight forward it allows the camera spend quite a bit of time on Kelly's learning of street dance and the funny two's responding of the jazz. Now he battle again... personally I am not so into breaking and locking, so the individual beat did not cheer me up, until the three got a choreography together. I was not impressed by either jazz solo or street solo, but putting them together gave a chemistry which wad spectacular to watch. Then they were approved by the agent, and they were making up moves in the studio, now the style becomes more like modern with a story told... blablabla, and the audition 'Ain't no Stoppin Us' was amazing. It think this was very inspirational, because it merged the breakin popin lockin perfectly with jazz. These days, street dance movies tend to work on stage effect rather than the body moves (yes, I am referring exactly to the Step Up 5, in fact starting from Step Up 3, street dance in movies have been flooded with stage effects and state-of-art gears), then you could in the final 'Street Jazz', we were not watching circus clown juggling with firing sticks, though the background was staged up, they were primarily demonstrating us the power and possibilities of our body, and I think that's what dancing should be.

Other than the dancing
:/ The story was lame, simple, silly...
Acting? Well, dancers are not actors. Pretty faces? Not quite. Fantastic costumes? Not in terms of 2014's point of view... but that's exactly what 80's was.

It is overall a weak story, but that's why we like it. If you love dancing, and you enjoy watching dancing, it will not disappoint you.
