Every one of the SU seemed to have a theme, wanted to present
something more than a corny movie, let’s see. SU 1 had a simple
story with some decent dancing, SU2 had a predictable story too with
average dancing, SU3 had a not-so-believable story with a little
dancing plus some uses of tiny gears to spice up the dances, SU4 had
an unrealistic story and more use of effect on dances, now SU5 does
not have a story but abundant use of effects.
With all the flamboyance, can you see the dancing? There were
shots of swinging bodies flipping hair, a lot of R & B, but where
was the dancing? There was some dancing of course, the point is stage
effect had already captured you and you would not be able to enjoy
the art in its pure form. But no, I am not saying that I did not
enjoy effects, but if that was the thing I was looking for, Guardians
of the Galaxy, or anything with the Marvel logo would do. It sells
itself a dance movie, implies the market that it would be the best
DANCE movie you ever watch, but sadly, it only brings the opposite.
Individual dances were all fine, they sprinkled zest but they just
popped up seemed to message me like ‘this is a dance movie, so here
are the dances you are waiting for’. The choreography was actually
not bad, but when other elements need to be fused in, the dance
itself seemed to be buried. The use of visual effect is a brilliant
idea for shows, my point is when we go for competition, when the
judges are looking for would not be the sand, the fire and the wind
but how well the dancers are. Okay, maybe I missed the fact that ‘the
competition’ is probably an entertaining performance more than a
‘dance competition…
Sum it all up, I like watching street dance and expect a dance is
a dance but not a circus performance.p.s. This is completely personal opinion.
